We recently purchased a Constantine Cherkas painting, "Still Life", that has another painting on the reverse side. It appears to be a self portrait or that of his son. Is there any information that you can send us about this painting? Is it his custom to paint on both sides of the canvas? We'd appreciate any info you can pass along. Gary B <garbowaikiki@hotmail.com> Waco, TX - My Mother (who is 79) has an oil painting which was originally given to her Great Uncle Frank, a picture framer and repairer of oils somewhere on the Gold Coast area in Chicago in 1800's. It features a bashful boy in a blue jacket with fresh produce in a basket next to him. We do not know anything else about the painting. The name on the picture is E. Pollack. However, her Great Uncle Frank framed the painting and found some areas of the picture were scraped, primarily the bottom, so he touched them up and the painter's name, almost obliterated before the repair, might have thought that was the name. The rest of the painting was not repaired to our knowledge. The back of the canvas shows the artist began his drawing there in pencil. Any info is greatly appreciated. Cannot find any 'E. Pollock" artist listed anywhere on internet search sites. L. Drummond <we3dsaz@yahoo.com> AZ - I have recently purchased what I believe is an original Georgina Lara painting at an estate. RPK Hawaii <artmasters@hawaii.com> - Thursday, July 22, 2004 at 00:17:24 (PDT) I recently purchased 11 pieces of artwork by the Czech artist Adolf Benca. The following link will take you to a slide show of 29 of his works. http://www.slovakculture.org/gallery/benca/mslide.html The work is very Picasso like. From the dates on art (85-88) I'm assuming it was done while the artist was studying at Chicago's art institute. It was found in the basement of a Hyde Park mansion. All pieces are affixed to artist board, some still with the tattered edges of an artist sketch pad. Various mediums are used. All of the pieces are signed and most have the artists personal stamp on them. Please let me know if you are interested in the collection and I will arrange a viewing. Warm Regards, Michelle DiGiacomo -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Artist Name: Adolf Benca Artist Dates: (Stupava, Czechoslovakia, 1959 - ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Medium and Support: pastel, ink and charcoal on paper Comments: Adolf Benca, first came to public attention in a one?artist show in 1980 when he was still an undergraduate art student at Cooper Union in New York. Benca’s images then were amorphous, scarcely emerging from the ooze of his tangle of lines and patches of dark wash. Titles like Sleeping Gods and Fathers and Sons as well as The Rape, Orphic Initiation, and Eurydice tell us that Benca has taken up the largest themes??myth, the great art of the past, and the natures of men and women. Between his B.F.A. degree and M.F.A. work at Columbia, Benca studied anatomical medicine as a means of advancing his exploration of the human body. His themes traverse aspects of the evolution of the world and its people, while the emotions depicted range from procreative ecstasy to the "little death" of orgasm and, further, to the dolorous dejection of the quiet grave. It is Benca’s ambition that his oeuvre eventually become an encyclopedia of pictorgrams of his century. In this aspiration, the artist feels aligned with the scope and spirit of Diderot and Voltaire, who deciphered their time and place in words. All Those Inside of 1986 presents animals, humans, and robust compositional columns in a stark environment of untouched white paper. The three enormous heads are connected literally by lines traveling from one figure to the other and by their shared contours. They are, on the other hand, separated by the different directions in which they gaze??a situation of place suggesting the solitary far view into the distance, which makes mutual eye contact impossible. The psychological isolation of each individual and the soulful remove among the three is enhanced rather than compromised by the close physical proximity of the group. Benca’s firm grounding in the European tradition of Giotto, Rembrandt, Goya, Munch, and Picasso is evident here. The sixteenth?century Bolognese painters Annibale and Lodovico Carracci as well as the Milanese Caravaggio, whose works Benca studied in 1987-88 on a Fulbright grant to Italy, are especially important for the way they transform a multileveled reality. In a statement of purpose, Benca defined the central issue that preoccupies him as precisely that complicated reality, and his task as an attempt to investigate its questions in all of their complexity. While his art historical predecessors lived in more homogeneous societies, Benca lives in an era marked by fragmentation. Modernity, the hallmark of the twentieth century, is for this artist the condensation of irreconcilable forces. References Matilsky, Barbara C. It's an Oil painting in a hard carved frame, with a vase full of red poppies. In the bottom right corner its signed "Max Streckenbach" Then beneath that "Eckernforde". On the back theres a label which looks to be Taber-Prang Art Company, but its pretty weathered and torn so I cant be sure. I know I just learned about Max Streckenbach in Art History II, hes was a fairly famous 19th century German still-life mostly. But I really need an appraisel/ information on this paining. Thanks!
