"My friendships with these noble
people brings a connection to the
natural world that enlivens my art
and enriches my life.
"
Carolyn Nelson

Earth, Water, Fire, and Light

As a life path colors the fragile threads of a personal tapestry -- Carolyn Nelson's life is woven with a depth of emotion in earthy hues that fires her passion and her art.

Drawn to nature and native peoples, her work springs from her friendship with the Pima and Apache Indians of Mexico. Her paintings capture the strength and simplistic elegance of their lives and of the rugged beauty of their Sierra Madre Mountains. Carolyn's commitments here involve teaching canning, general mechanics, mathematics, first aid, and of course, drawing to the children.

As an artist, teacher, fine art conservationist, and weaver, she has contributed her diverse skills in important public arenas; from the Frank Lloyd Wright Institute to the Revolutionary Museum at the University of Sonora and the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico.

Now, when not in her beloved mountains, she directs the Sheepfold Studio in Lake Park, Florida where she paints, teaches, lectures, and manages her expanding professional career.

The Source of My Art

Today, my work comes from my deep connection with the native peoples of the Sierra Madre. The emotions and experiences of being among them seems to blend with my early foundation in European Impressionism and forms itself like tapestry, rich in color and tactile sensation.

I want to convey the depth and beauty of their lives within the primitive and stark lifestyle that their rugged mountains demand. They and their way of life invigorates my spirit and infuses my art.

There is a vibrant and heroic peoples here, who's heritage and gracious way of life is now in peril.
